NOVATION NOVA

I've had the Novation Nova (desktop version) for a couple of months. While the blue monster didn't have the "fattest" sound, I was able to create some great patches on it that would fit nicely in any mix.The last OS update (v4.0) gave this synth a whole new life. With VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) emulation, new filter types, new reverb types, and Double Saw!

NOVA SPECS
- 16-Voice polyphony (4-voice more with OS 4.0 !!)
- 3 Oscillators per Voice.
- 1 Filter with 12dB, 18dB and 24dB mode and Overdrive control.
- 2 Lfos (slow, medium and fast modes with Speed control, Delay and Tempo Synch)
- 3 Envelopes
- 6-part multitimbral (each can have it's own effects, up to 42 Effects Simultaneously)
- 2 Inputs for Filtering, Vocoding and other effects.
- 40 Band Vocoder & Full Synth Engine Simultaneously.
- Up to 6 Arpeggiators Simultaneously with 384 Poly, Mono and User Patterns.
PROS
- Excellent inteface. Almost everything can be accessed from the front panel. Plus some great fonctions in menus.
- 6-part multimbrality. (you can have 6 sounds at the same time for recording or for live performance. They can be layered or split.
- Each part can have its own effects!! (no other synth company has that!). )
- In Performances mode, edited patches are saved within Performance only!.
- VCO emulation makes all the difference. (only in OS 4.0)
- Filter Q value allows to preserve the low end of a sound even with maximum Resonance value (squealage point :). Awesome!!!
- Wide sonic possibilities.
- Can emulate classic analog sounds
- Can create modern synth sounds (dance / trip-hop / R&B...)
- You can find one used at a great price!
CONS
- it beeps everytime you click a button. And there is no way of disabling that.
- Reverbs are a little metallic for my taste.
- No negative modulation with Envelopes.

FINAL THOUGHTS
if you're like me -always looking to try something new- or if you're seeking a decent virtual-analog synth with a great interface you can pick up a Novation Nova on eBay for cheap..

If you get your hands on one of those, check your OS version when powering up the unit, and upgrade to OS4.0 if it's anything else.
